Covered Arena vs. Open Arena: Making the Right Choice

One of the biggest decisions in arena construction is whether to build a covered or open arena. Both have distinct advantages, and the right choice depends on your climate, budget, and riding goals.

    Open Arena Advantages

Lower initial cost. An open arena typically costs 50–70% less than a comparable covered arena, making it the most accessible option for many horse owners.

Flexibility. Open arenas are easier to expand or modify. You can always add a cover structure later.

Natural lighting and airflow. Many riders prefer the open-air experience, and horses often perform better in natural environments.

Faster construction. Without the structural engineering and steel work, open arenas can be completed in 2–3 weeks vs. 6–8 weeks for covered.

    Covered Arena Advantages

Year-round riding. This is the #1 reason horse owners invest in a covered arena. Rain, snow, or extreme sun — you ride regardless.

Footing preservation. A covered arena dramatically extends footing life by preventing rain saturation, UV degradation, and wind erosion.

Property value. A quality covered arena significantly increases property value and appeal to potential buyers.

Horse comfort. Shade protection is critical in hot climates like Arizona and Texas, where ground temperatures can exceed 150°F in direct sun.

    The Hybrid Approach

Many of our clients opt for a phased approach:

    1. Phase 1: Build a properly engineered open arena with a base designed to support a future cover

    2. Phase 2: Add a steel cover structure when budget allows

This approach lets you start riding sooner while keeping the covered option open. The key is engineering the base correctly from day one — retrofitting drainage and base work under an existing cover is significantly more expensive.

    Steel Structure Options

Our pre-engineered steel arena covers feature:

  1. Clear-span design: No interior columns to obstruct riding
  2. Hot-dip galvanized steel: 30+ year lifespan with minimal maintenance
  3. Engineered for local loads: Wind, snow, and seismic calculations specific to your region
  4. Modular panels: Side panels can be open, partially enclosed, or fully enclosed
